Tesla Design (located in Los Angeles, CA) conceives vehicle and other products that directly support the company’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. We care greatly about building products that stand the test of time, even as design and technology keep evolving.
As a Clay Modeler at Tesla, you will be responsible for executing design in clay for conceptual models/vehicles from design data. These would range from clay model mockups to fully finished assemblies, up to and including prototype vehicles. We work fast and efficient under tight timelines while retaining quality to the design. The role will require a high level of collaboration with designers and engineering teams with a keen focus on attention to detail.
The ability to demonstrate resiliency, unfazed by ambiguity or change in direction, willingness to assist other teams, and take initiative are necessary in this position.

Responsibilities
- Creating three-dimensional (3D) design clay models according to designer and engineering specifications.
- Implementation of reverse engineering data into the model and preparing for production.
- Fabricating and hard modeling prototype automotive parts
- Read and interpret sketches, renderings, conceptual designs, scan data, and engineering data.
- All aspects of sculpting demonstrated from scale concepts to full size exteriors and detailed interior models including but not limited to: form appreciation (sketch modeling from renderings, sketches and verbal information), design sense (esthetic and proportion evaluation), form development (surfacing and highlighting), detail modeling, finish and presentation techniques.
- Material analysis - understanding potential and limitation uses of design and production relevant materials.
- 10+ years of professional experience working in major OEM design facilities and leading a modeling team on specific programs.
- Demonstrable proficiency with all stages of design model development from conceptual sketch modeling through production tolerance feasibility properties.
- Competent in all aspects of armature / frame assembly relevant to model construction.
- Experience with use and application of 3-axis measuring equipment for digitizing and balancing of information, as well as 3- and 5-axis milling machines.
- Technical knowledge of how to read and interpret engineering layouts, and information relating to package hard points and feasibility issues.
- Proven background in the use, application, and compliance with safety regulations of workshop tools and equipment.
- Successful completion of a clay modeling test is required.
