I am looking at using one of these agents and have heard all sorts of stories by unhappy people who work for them, e.g. lies, late payment etc.
Or is this just how it is?

agents are agents they will all tell you what you want to here, if your that green and worried about not being paid on time get a permie job and leave the contracting to the big boys , sorry junior but thats how it is.

;)I can safely say this is the easiest question asked to date.
Technicon are by far the worst. Reasons.
1. They have been known to undercut other agents to get a contract and yet their cut remains the same.
2 Late payment has often been an issue.
3.The only agent insisting on using lease labour laws
4.Some of their staff have an obvious dislike of modellers.
5.Changing the conditions on contracts half way through.
6.Unlike Futura, not set up or run by modellers.
7. Subsidise their design studio through increasing their cut from the charge rate of contractors.
I will point out though, I do not believe Futura is all that good, but at least it was set up with the intention (I believe) to improve the rates for modellers by reducing the agencies cut, and this still holds true to some degree.

This is all a load of B*******
The agents are there to make a profit (hopefully not too much), they generally pay you before they get paid by the client, so there has to be a mark-up. It is up to the individual to negotiate the deal that he/she is comfortable with, this includes rate, flights, payment terms and any other issues before accepting the contract. If the agent fails on any of these terms then you have a right to complain, if the agent keeps to their word/contract with you and you are not happy, then you did not do your homework before negotiating did you? I think you will find that the agents (Technicon or Futura) will honor what ever they agree with you before you accept, the key is working out what you think is the optimum deal for yourself and then being happy with it even when you realise that you may have sold yourself short, instead of moaning that you have been ripped off and infact the agent has stuck to every word as agreed but failed to tell you someone was a better negotiator then you

Some people just like to whinge. The Reps don't like modelers? They sure do a good job pretending by paying for drinks and dinner every few months. Sure, they're getting their cut, but that's the game. And the risk of it all going pear-shaped is a given. As for the lies, Those always come from company who puts their badge on the model. They lie to EVERYBODY.

You are obviously a agent hiding behind an alias shagmaster Pay for drinks and a meal every couple of months!! If you don’t put it on company expenses which I know you do, how many minutes would it take to earn that back from modellers working for you? If it all goes pear shaped, do you really think the agency would lose out over the modeller?

::)Mr.Browngld,you,ve got a bit of a nerve saying Futura are not run by modellers.Iwonder what Graham and Dave would say? I have worked for Technicon for a number of years now and with the exception of a few hic-cups,which all companies suffer from sometimes ,they have treated their employees fairly. You sign your life away the minute you decide to become a contractor, the moment you accept the Agents offer.Of course you and other complainers have never missed a payment before , have you?. Always paid your credit card bill in full, electric, gas, and quarterly T bills. never been away and got back home to find the dreaded RED reminder.I can,t remember seeing you applying for a visa at the embassy, with all your paperwork and fees at the ready by yourself. If you feel hard done by, leave, go somewhere else.Ply your expertise / trade ,where you can command your worth and get it.Life is all about compromise, and it,s a pity more of you don,t realise this. Any road up, well said Ratty, and Jeff

Undercutmaster, I can truly say that shagmaster is a modeller and not an agent as you imply from your posting. And yes we are taken out for drinks and meals from our agent ( Technicon) as we work bloody hard for them. They are running a business at the end of the day and how many business' do you know work or last without making a profit! I have worked through both Futura and Technicon and can honestly say that they are both good agencies. You have to forget about what they are making out of you because that is just the way it is. If you want to wait the 90 days for payment and you can go direct then good luck. From a personal point of view I prefer the payment in the bank on time !!! We all know that the contracts that we sign have to be taken at face value because at the end of the day if the client wants to pull the plug on a project then it is the contractor that pays the price. In todays environment we do not get the chance to wait until the work comes in we are politely informed that we will call you when we need you. I do not agree with it but what can we do? In answer to the posting " who is the worst" speak to both agents find out what is on offer and then you decide. Remember live and stick by your decisions if you feel that the deal is not the best one then decline the offer and go elsewhere. That is the freedom of contracting " YOU HAVE THE CHOICE "
